About this event

This collection is made up of abstract art pieces that capture the essence of women's bodies and landscapes through a medium found at the intersection of painting and sculpture.

Bodies and landscapes have been longtime favourite subjects within the art world. If you’ve ever taken an art class or walked through the Louvre, you know the world loves portraits and landscapes. While female artists have been nearly absent from the cultural landscape up until the late 20th century. The women’s body has always been a favourite subject throughout art history. In the collection, I crafted each piece to land within the overlap of characteristics between women’s bodies and landscapes. The first four pieces of the collection present the curves of bodies and earth along with the organic flow of patterns and movement, such as that in nature. While the last four pieces presented in the collection, maintain curves while leaning into topographical depictions of the earth, as well as a reflective finish that includes the reflection of the observer into the piece itself.

There is an unspoken relationship between the artist, the art, and the observer. As well as an ongoing conversation around who gets to determine the meaning of the work - the artist or the observer. I have, however, never heard of the subject being included in this meaning-making dynamic. With the pivotal role women's bodies have played in the inspiration behind art, and creative process throughout history, and in my own work, I thought it was important to ask the subject to become a part of the art itself. Inviting the subject to determine meaning in a more collaborative way. I decided to create my “SHE IS” series of prints, with the help of photographer Mariia Ivanova and an incredible group of models. I collaborated with the women involved in this project to create a series of photographs that represent the pieces in this collection and the women they are inspired by.
